Stephen Holmes and the team at The 5Rs Partnership have provided Aoba-Japan International School with a validated objective assessment of our reputation. Their assessment is valuable to us because it informs, affirms and confronts our thinking and planning.”
2020 – Senior Vice President, GEMS Education, Dubai, UAE:
“Dr Stephen Holmes has been working with a number of GEMS schools over the past year on how to differentiate each of our schools not only from each other but also from competing schools. During that time, he has brought to us at GEMS and applied unique tools that he has developed over a long period of time specifically to provide schools with platform for identity building and differentiation, most especially through the crucial areas of teaching pedagogy and curriculum. This has provided our schools with a whole new lens as to how they might effectively distinguish themselves and build authentic positioning.”

CIP: College Internship Program: Summer 2021 dates now available
The College Internship Program (CIP) has announced dates and locations for their 2021 summer programs for teens and young adults with autism and other learning differences.
Next summer, CIP will offer Summer@CIP, their traditional two-week in-person program at five highly-rated college locations in addition to SummerSessions@CIP, a virtual program that was successfully launched last year. The 2021 schedule has been designed to provide multiple options for families due to any possible restrictions surrounding COVID-19. All programs will be offered between June 27th through August 6th, 2021. Program dates and locations can be found on CIP's website.
CIP is one of the world’s most comprehensive transition programs for teens and young adults with autism and other learning differences, offering support with college, independent living, and employment.
"The transition from adolescence to young adulthood for people with learning differences is a critical time in one's life," commented CIP President Dan McManmon. ”Our tight-knit groups of participants will learn strategies for making a well-prepared transition to life after high school including independent living skills, practice socialization and recreation, and college readiness, all in a very safe and structured environment.”
The traditional two-week summer program will be offered on-site at five college campuses where students will live in college dorms and experience a taste of college life. Students will learn new skills that are embedded in CIP’s cutting edge programming that has been crafted to meet the unique needs and interests of students who learn differently. Participants will also spend time with peers exploring activities in the surrounding community with an emphasis on making new friends and having fun.
The virtual program will be offered Monday-Friday July 19-30. Participants will benefit from CIP’s expert staffing, small group cohorts, and ample opportunities for fun and socializing such as virtual escape rooms and scavenger hunts. Participants enroll in SummerSessions@CIP from across the US and internationally. Parent workshops will also be offered.
Kristen, a parent of a recent participant stated “Cameron had a wonderful time, and the summer program really exceeded our expectations, honestly. It’s usually hard to engage students online for so many hours per day, but Cameron came off every evening feeling energized and happy. Thank you.”
CIP has specialized in the educational needs of teens and young adults with autism and learning differences for over 35 years, offering year-round residential and summer transition program options with unparalleled supports since 1984. CIP’s summer programs are designed to offer a pathway for families to help them determine the best next steps for their young adults with learning differences.

ICMEC: International Centre for Missing & Exploted Children: Child Protection Update 7: Parent support over school break
Child Protection Update 7: Parent support over school break
Why now?
.
- During the pandemic, sexting behaviour has increased as a way for isolated students to connect with each other or get validation or attention.
- Self-harm and suicide are outcomes of non-consensual sharing of sexual images and of trauma. These numbers are rising globally.
- Parents should know what to do if a child discloses that they have shared a sexual image. Information sheet here.
See trends, research, and news in CP News.
Time for conversations
A number of new tools have been launched to support parent conversations with children around safety and harm.
Research indicates schools and parents await too long before conveying critical information to children about adult content online or healthy touch. Most children have already viewed adult sexual content online by the age of 11.
Good tips for schools to share include:
.
- 'talking up' rather than down to the child (framing it as a way for the adult to learn about a child's experiences)
- planning for several smaller conversations rather than conveying information at one time.
- use materials depicting children a little older than your child rather than younger or the same age.
A number of vetted conversation starter videos and resources are at EdPortal.ICMEC.org / Curriculum / Family Resources. You will find curriculum scope and sequence and lesson resources here also.
During this holiday time, you might also provide this more lighthearted conversation between children and parents about social media, consent and 'Sharenting'
Specifically for younger children
.
- Build and Talk Lego - A program to support conversations while building about online safety, and abuse prevention. Learn more about the program here.
-
- Healthy touch conversation guide here.
- WHO Parenting Infographics (in 70+ languages)
- Hot Chocolate Talk (Committee for Children)

Looking Ahead
.
An online facilitator course for Parents as Partners, a community outreach framework funded by the Office of Overseas Schools is coming in early 2020. Learn more about Parents as Partners here. The virtual course registration link will be listed in Regional Safeguarding Events in early 2021.
An ICMEC sponsored working group on service-learning and rights-based child protection will be formed next year. The group will draft a resource to support child protection risk assessments and evaluation of children's rights and dignity related to service-learning programs. If you would like to recommend a colleague who is engaged in this work, please let us know. We will aim for diversity in a school location, and participant role and nationality, and may not be able to accept all those interested. If you'd like to be considered, please share your contact details, region and role to EdPortal@ICMEC.org.
This is the final child protection update of 2020. You can view previous updates here. Thank you for prioritizing the care of children during this challenging year. Wishing you peace and health in the new year.

Our multi-campus university of applied sciences is firmly rooted in the northern part of the Netherlands while at the same time maintaining a strong international focus. At all our Dutch and international branches, we are always looking for new ways to successfully integrate education, research, and the latest developments in the professional world. Our students embark on teaching experience placements each year and are placed at a range of international schools on 6 continents. We are proud of our network of international partner schools and excited to explore further possibilities to broaden our students' horizons continuously.
Our students, lecturers and researchers work together in small teams on real-life assignments and share their innovative ideas in practice. Our courses incorporate the latest developments in international education and our study programmes actively address the issues international education is faced with in its global context.

Don’t just take our word for it, here are some of the positive things our delegates have had to say about us and our courses:
“For the first time I actually understand what I am aiming for in my job. All the practical tasks were applied in reality and really helped. The depth of understanding and a sense of what my job is supposed to be empowered me and transformed the way I carry out my job. It is the first training I have done which actually trains you for the job you do. Definitely do it. It's the best course I have ever taken and I have completed a degree, Masters, a Grad Dip, an AMBDA, a PGCE, and now this!!” - Sarah Brown completed iSENCO 2020, based in France.
“The course staff are experienced, knowledgeable and helpful. The materials are relevant and reusable long after the course is over. I feel I have a wealth of documents etc that I will refer back to for the rest of my career. I took the course to deepen my own knowledge and to have a more structured approach to headship and you have met those needs head on and in an enjoyable but informative manner.” - Liam Bellamy completed NPQH 2020, based in Bahrain.
“All of the courses I have enrolled on have exceeded my expectations. The detail and structure that goes into the planning of the courses allows for delegates to feel guided throughout the course, even when there is no face to face element. The course tutors are extremely knowledgeable, approachable and helpful; they respond quickly to any messages and are always willing to help.” - Catrin Brauner completed CPT3A and NASENCO 2019, based in Dubai.
