TEACHING ESSENTIALS: FOUNDATION LEVEL

Establishing practice

The foundation level comprises of one two-day workshop equating to two days of contact time.

DAY 1

OUTLINE

On this first day we will explore what makes an effective teacher, how to optimise the conditions for learning, how to bring passion, flair and creativity to the classroom and develop your understanding of how the brain works. This day is supported with a strong evidence base, including essential reading of relevant research and literature from leading pedagogical experts, research organisations and online resources.

OBJECTIVES

  • Create foundations for confident teaching and learning
  • Explore the fundamental aspects of pedagogy
  • Examine lesson planning basics

OUTCOMES

  • Gain a clear understanding of how children learn
  • Increase your awareness of factors affecting learning
  • Develop your understanding of pace and challenge in lessons

DAY 2

OUTLINE

Questioning is the most important tool for a teacher. It provides engagement, pace, challenge and imbues curiosity, independence and resilience. This day looks at how we can develop this skill, with a range of inspirational and practical approaches to improve teacher questioning. There will also be an opportunity to look at high quality digital resources to support delivery, increase engagement and facilitate rapid assessment.

OBJECTIVES

  • Develop a range of approaches for structuring questions
  • Consider a variety of techniques for raising challenge
  • Explore digital strategies to support engagement and assessment

OUTCOMES

  • Develop a better understanding of the structure of good questions
  • Acquire a variety of techniques to assess pupil progress
  • Improve your knowledge of digital apps for questioning
