AlJawhara is the Head of Wellbeing and Safeguarding at Qatar Foundation. With a background in Sociology of Education and Cultural Studies, AlJawhara’s work focuses on the importance of unpacking bias and creating opportunities to develop authentic relationships with the community and context in which schools operate. She has been a part of the Safeguarding and Child Protection program at Qatar Foundation since its introduction and has worked to design and develop policies, procedures and training that bring international best practices in conversation with local laws, cultures, and customs. AlJawhara’s work emphasizes the importance of recognizing and meeting your community where they are, and going on the journey together,rather than importing and applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Course outlines:
Session 1: Creating a Culture of Caring; Cultural Responsiveness and Safeguarding
- Unpacking our own biases
- Partnership – Nudging not Judging
- Protection of student self-concept and cultural identity
- Participation in creating a shared culture and safe spaces
Session 2: Navigating Ambiguity; Child Abuse as a Social Construct
- Defining abuse
- Understanding who may be vulnerable and how
- Contextualizing a ‘Safeguarding Threshold’
- Exploring the grey areas through culturally specific examples (Ex. Issues of consent, affluent neglect, mental health stigma etc.)
Session 3: No School is an Island; The Importance of Building Bridges with the Wider Community
- Your school as a conduit for change
- The role of the CPO
- Importance of policy and context specific training
- Communication with parents
- Identifying key community stakeholders (social workers, family lawyers, health professionals, grassroots activists)
